Re: AMD stated in their 4Q01 CC: I think that were we stand is that we will probably close the end of
the fourth quarter being somewhere around 40% share of the US Retail mobile market

Prior to the recovery of AMD desktop ASPs with the ramp of Athlon XP, the retail mobile market was a key target for AMD. Since then, Intel's scorched earth pricing policy has dropped ASPs in the market for both companies.

The price of a given retail notebook configuration has dropped significantly since then, as AMD's entry into the market has replaced monopoly pricing for retail notebook CPUs with market pricing.

So Intel, in their crusade to deny resources to their competitor, collapsed pricing in another of its markets - and AMD quietly shifted its focus to white box desktop and low end servers.

I think the key time to be well positioned in this market is late summer - a time when some substantial part of the US population buys a retail notebook for a student to use in school.

We'll have to see where the two companies are positioned by late June early July.
