It is true in the specific sense as it related to the dual mode synergy between Unicom's GSM/GPRS network and their CDMA(1X) network, made possible by the MSM6300 which is exclusively designed for dual mode 2G GSM/GPRS networks and 3G CDMA1X networks.

Forget about the overlay system they put together in Europe to show the GSM operators. It cannot be used to overlay existing GSM 1.25 MHZ carriers in Europe in the current spectrum. European companies would have to deploy an additional CDMA1X carrier to make GSM1X functional in Europe since CDMA cannot occupy current GSM spectrum.

The only place that GSM1X could be used as an overlay would be South America or other markets that have not made intentional efforts to keep CDMA out of the existing spectrum.

Please check the slide show from Tokyo. The slide on GSM1X architecture demonstrate the realistic vision for GSM1X - not the overlay demonstration they did in Cannes. As GSM carriers run out of capacity in current spectrum, most companies have enough spectrum to choose between building out an additional 1.25 MHZ CDMA1X carrier & a 10 MHZ WCDMA carrier.
