UltraNet Announces Major Infrastructure Upgrade; ISP To Bring 56 Kbps Modem Speed To All Massachusetts Customers PR Newswire - July 07, 1997 10:07 %CPR %MLM %PDT V%PRN P%PRN MARLBOROUGH, Mass., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- UltraNet Communications, Inc., one of New England's largest Internet service providers and communications companies, is initiating a complete upgrade of its transmission equipment to make access to the Internet for its Massachusetts customers more reliable and two to four times faster, President Geoffrey W. Schultz announced today. The system will begin operating on July 20th. The new infrastructure will utilize Rockwell technology to support K56Flex modems (speeds up to 56 Kbps) and ISDN (speeds up to 128Kbps). UltraNet will also support customers using US Robotics X2 technology. The upgrade will allow customers to connect to the Internet at faster speeds, thereby decreasing downloading time, and, ultimately, telephone costs and time online. "UltraNet has always prided itself on being the first to offer its customers the latest in Internet technology," says Schultz. "This improvement further emphasizes our commitment to bringing our customers the very best technology and service available." UltraNet will now maintain a large pool of modems in a central location in Cambridge, instead of dividing them among various cities and towns throughout Massachusetts. Customers' local access numbers will be forwarded to this pool, leading to greater efficiency and significantly reducing the probability of getting a busy signal. All of UltraNet's customers in the 617 and 508 area codes will be switched to the improved system starting July 20; customers in the 413 area by mid- August; and New Hampshire and Rhode Island customers by mid-September. UltraNet currently serves about 40,000 dial-up customers and 600 high speed clients throughout New England. SOURCE UltraNet Communications, Inc.
