I do not want to claim that they are the same. I want to point out historical nuances.

Pogroms were some generally instigated by the Tsar to stir popular passions and distract people from criticism of the government. There were sometimes spontaneous pogroms, but they were often dubious, and involved a tangle of disputes. Still, it is true that religious symbolism entered in to some extent, I will not deny it. But not merely religious difference. First, the charge of Deicide was peculiar to relations between Christians and Jews. Second, by itself, that rarely caused a pogrom. Instead, rumors of Jews abducting Christian boys to kill and use in Passover rituals, or rumors of plots against the Tsar--- in other words, lies about supposedly current outrages---- fueled the fire. If Jews had not been perceived of as alien, it would have been harder to attach such canards to them, but difference by itself was not enough to stir the pot.......
