I use the ADX. It's been working for me.

On this Nasdaq chart, that sept/oct 2001 period seemed to work, as I use it.

ADX flat or falling, I interpret as Non-trending, and I pay more attention to the oscillators, like Stochastic.

ADX rising, I interpret as Trending, and I pay more attention to the Trend-following indicators, like MACD.

I don't mind sharing, it's non-proprietary. <gg>

And I guarantee, it sometimes works.
