It is a factor in some wars. In some cases it predominates, in others it is likely a proxy for other causes, in other cases it is one among many, and in some cases it has no important role. I objected to a blanket statement about it being the main cause of war, that's all.

In Bosnia, there was a high rate of intermarriage among Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox, and no great religious fervor. The civil war revolved around rumors of influence from Middle East fanatics, and the supposed intention of Bosnian Moslems to set up an Islamic State. The Muslims disavowed this intention, but it was enough to mobilize Bosnian Croats and Serbs. Most Western observers think that Slobodan Milosevic stirred the pot and supported Bosnian Serb forces to gain as much territory for Greater Serbia as he could. The Croatian government is presumed to have decided to make its own land grab once things got rolling......
