Jay, I think it's my old Globalstar syndrome again. I can see all the problems. I've seen them for years and expected them and expected some consequences.
I suspect my faulty belief basis is that humans are decent, human, semi-intelligent and want to make things better. When they see things going wrong, they'll move to improve. Well, they didn't in Globalstar. They just carried on trying the wrong things to fix things.
So now, I'm thinking that sure, there'll be the crunch, as I've expected since 1997 or thereabouts and was ranting about in 1999, expecting the crunch "certainly by the end of the month", month, after month, after month but the mania kept building. It became a standing joke.
When the crunch came, people who know stuff and run stuff, like Uncle Al, would do the right thing. Which he did. People would re-order their lives to the new exigencies of financial demise. GeorgeW, being a free enterprise kind of guy wouldn't stop international trade [even though he purports to be a religious crank - that's just a necessary pretence to get votes from the loonies in the USA; same as in Moslem countries, only people who put on a good Moslem act will be elected].
My script doesn't include deliberate acts of mayhem, murder, destruction and bloody-mindedness; "If I can't have blah blah, I'll bring the whole lot down with me".
Perhaps I should ditch my concept of people as inherently good with high-end lab-rat intelligence. Perhaps I should toss in a large dollop of stupidity, malevolence, greed, ignorance more akin to Pol Pot, Mao, Stalin, Hitler and Hussein [Saddam]. When things get a bit rattley, they do seem to come to the fore. Strong but stupid, leadership-men who will, "Do something about it". First they kill any prospective opposition, then they get a taste for the job and improve their techniques.
So, now we have GeorgeW "doing something about" steel. After all, why should red-blooded Americans be put out of work and business when those murderous, mad, envious, disrespectful, cheating, lying, slave-driving aliens undercut steel prices and dump steel in the USA, taking all the jobs and profits? They aren't helping much in Afghanistan and against the Mad Mullah terrorist jihad, so stuff them. Americans are being killed in defence of freedom and the USA is the bulwark against the jihad. So, let's protect Americans.
Hmmmm. Maybe I need an attitude adjustment. The world as happiness, harmony and light is maybe not really what people want. Look at Raymond for example, right here in this discussion. All bellicose belligerence, contempt and nastiness. Not to mention a few others. GFY seems to be a top-of-mind attitude to other people, right here in SI. Maybe I'm pissing in the ocean, farting against thunder, as they say down on the farm.
Yeah, I have trouble believing how stupid, ignorant and malevolent people are. I really do think they are good and have some basic clues. Then again, how many would understand a trade deficit if they fell over it and how many could string three sentences together on free will versus determinism versus creationism. How many really feel sick when some gooks get cooked in napalm, when infidels are splattered into mincemeat, when Jews get the final solution, gaijin get the Nanking treatment, pakeha turn into long pig, when Japs are the lab rats in nuclear war, when ... I feel sick thinking about it... you know the story...
