Also, what about job losses for people who export their products to countries who will now retaliate with their own tariffs? I agree, I think it's a bad idea. If an industry can't stand on it's own, it should be allowed to go under and the workers can be re-trained. One exception to that might be the railroad industry which is essential and subsidised almost universally by governments. I think it was a politically motivated move. Weren't there lots of tariffs imposed shortly before the great depression? Perhaps, they think they will be needing more recruits for the armed forces and an unemployed person is more likely to sign up than a person with a good job.
