Fed Survey Shows Most Areas Reported Economic Improvements in January, February

WASHINGTON -- Most of the Federal Reserve's 12 districts reported firmer economic conditions since the start of the year, echoing recent data suggesting that the economy may be turning the corner.

"A majority of Federal Reserve districts report some signs of improvement in economic conditions in January and early February," the Fed said Wednesday in its latest so-called beige book survey of economic conditions around the country.

Of the Fed's 12 districts, seven reported some pickup in activity or a positive tone. Three districts reported still weak economic activity, one reported little change and another reported mixed signals.

The beige book is a summary of economic activity prepared for use at the central bank's next Federal Open Market Committee meeting March 19 . The most recent report was prepared by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and reflects information gathered before Feb. 26, 2002 .

In its previous beige book report published Jan. 16 , the Fed said the U.S. economy stayed weak this winter as scattered reports of improvement came amid lingering notes of caution.
