That leaves a huge grey area for sensible and responsible parents to consider when applying discipline.

Sensible and responsible parents are not the issue. Abuse occurs in our society because one or the other parent is not sensible or responsible. If a parent is unable to control the tantrums of a three year old- the defiance of a thirteen year old is impossible to deal with. Most kids will respond to the will of their parents only after those parents have shown that they are responsible, sensible and fair....and most of all, consistent. For most kids, it's the unknown that scares them. Where's the line I can't cross? Parents that work as a team, give consistent rules and consequences, and are fair in their demanding the same from all siblings...have many fewer problems with their kids.

The toughest job any of us will ever have is parenting...and the payoff is worth it!
