Financial Times Deutschland: mm02 reconsiders UMTS investments -- (mm02 uberdenkt UMTS-Investitionen)

Mar 6, 2002, (Financial Times Deutschland /FT Information via COMTEX) -- mm02, the UK based mobile telecommunications group, is reconsidering its future investments in the third-generation (UMTS) mobile infrastructure of its German subsidiary Viag. Between December and June of next year, it aims to reach a decision as to whether it plans to invest in UMTS capacity in Germany. mm02 head Peter Erskine indicates that the UK company may postpone its UMTS debut on the German market, in which case Viag Interkom would, for the present, use the current GPRS standard.

The announcement comes as some surprise, as Germany counts among Europe's main mobile telecommunications markets. Mr Erskine points out that the key question is as to how much can be invested in Viag Interkom in order to produce appropriate earnings for shareholders. Viag Interkom is perceived as a problem area of the UK mobile telecommunications group, as its operations are not currently profitable. It aims for Ebitda to break even next year.
