China Unicom says to buy 500,000 CDMA handsets

BEIJING, March 7 (Reuters) - China Unicom Group plans to buy 500,000 CDMA phones to bolster what has been a slow rollout of its new CDMA-standard network, Wang Jianzhou, president of the company and its Hong Kong listed unit China Unicom Ltd <0762.HK>, said on Thursday.

"In order to remove manufacturers' worries about the CDMA market, we decided to buy direct from the manufacturers 500,000 handsets in March," Wang told a conference on CDMA technology in Beijing.

The launch of Unicom's network using the CDMA technology developed by San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> has been slowed in part by a shortage of phones in China.
