Sanyo's Chip Unit to Post Profit on Double-Digit Sales Growth

Osaka, March 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sanyo Electric Co.'s semiconductor unit expects to post a profit on double-digit growth in sales in the year starting April buoyed by a rebound in chip orders.

The unit of the world's biggest digital-camera maker is on the threshold of only breaking even in the year ending March 31 as chip sales may fall by as much as 15 percent on a lack of orders in October and November, said Tadahiko Tanaka, the unit's president, in an interview. ``The drop in orders has stopped since the new year,'' he said.

The chip industry last year was hit by a slump in sales of the two main products that use semiconductors: mobile phones and personal computers. This year, PC shipments are forecast to rise 4 percent by researcher Dataquest Inc., and Nokia Oyj, the largest mobile-phone maker, estimates industrywide handset sales to rise as much as 16 percent to 440 million units.
