UMC to Start Producing Chips With New Technology Next Quarter
By Alan Patterson

Hsinchu, Taiwan, March 7 (Bloomberg) -- United Microelectronics Corp., the second-largest maker of chips for other companies, said it will introduce in the next quarter a new production technology that helps cut costs.

``We'll start sometime in the middle of the second quarter,'' UMC Vice President Fu Tai Liou said in an interview. ``Chairman Bob Tsao held a party to celebrate the success of trial production,'' he said, confirming a China Times newspaper report.

UMC's progress with 0.13-micron technology, which larger rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is already offering to customers, will help UMC improve the average selling prices of its products. The technology helps increase the number of chips that can be made from a silicon wafer, cutting costs.

UMC's sales in the current quarter have been ``better than expected,'' Liou said, without giving details. Sales in the second quarter will continue to improve, he added.
