Isn't that a result of using the SIM/RUIM rather than some special thing about the phone that distinguishes it from a straight combo GSM and CDMA1X w/SIM/RUIM? Not exactly. SIM/RUIM card is only a card storing your account info. It will be used for authentication. Also it can be used to store your call list etc to. Nice little thing makes your life easier. But the phone got to be able to "talk" in the GSM language on top of CDMA. And this is defined by IS-833.
