Wellington's men survived the fr. attack at Waterloo of Napleon's general because he had them do a novel thing. Instead of standing and taking it, he had them lie down in the tall grass and shoot. Believe me they appreciated it.

Napoleon made several blunders at Waterloo as his intelligence was imperfect. As well, his grand armee's main guard unit inexplicably broke and retreated when they actually could have had the field. This could have been thee effect of concealed fire. Their headlong retreat into his main army, still under control, demoralized the forces.

Waterloo was a close loss, and Wellington had lots of allies some of whom arrived at the nick of time when Napoleons generals were not arriving. In a way, eventually, it was bound to happen, with everyone against him he was going to put his eggs in one basket, and trip with that basket.
