Japan Stocks, Yen Climb on Recovery Hopes

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese stock prices and the yen carved out more gains on Thursday on hopes that a turnaround in the U.S. economy will fuel an export-led recovery in Japan and drag the country out of its deepest recession in a decade.

A day ahead of key gross domestic product data expected to show Japan's recession worsening in the final three months of 2001, Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 average raced up 2.55 percent to a seven-month closing high of 11,648.34.

The yen hit a 10-week peak below 130 to the dollar, while government bonds clocked up their best levels in two months.

The Nikkei has now climbed in six of the past seven sessions, throwing on 24 percent from an 18-year low on February 6.

``Views that the worst is now behind us are spreading,'' said Masaru Morooka, equities general manager at Chuo Securities. ''The trend has changed.''
