"enormous philosophical implications"
or
A vested God

For many the implications would be a tremendous blow. Those who worship a vested God cannot adapt that belief to new knowledge. The Catholic Church may have a lead here because the Pope, as God's Representative on Earth, can modify the faith for the living body of believers, encompassing any new knowledge. The process of viewing, deducing and theorizing is not one that is supported by most faiths. Facts, when they are accepted, are usually molded to fit a certain framework, religious faith is viewing and theorizing, there is no deducing.

On the flip side, if you think that the Bible is literally true at this point in history, a few aliens are going to make very little difference to your POV.
