Sam,
Sprint's backbone currently carries 40% of US domestic internet traffic; bulk of AOL's was on Sprint. Sprint carries over 1 trillion bytes of info a month and Global IP carries over 60% of international traffic. Global IP is the international aspect of Sprint's internet backbone which is through Global One (a global JV between Deutsche Telekom (German Telecom), France Telecom, and Sprint). They also operate the only OC-3 IP link across Atlantic . You can check all this info on the Sept 16, 1996 issue of Communications Week. It may be outdated by now though. Sprint started moving towards ATM SONET capability 2 yrs ago and they now have the most advanced domestic network, which is 100 digital, 100 % bidirectional fiber extending 25,000 miles. They have the SONET fiber-ring backbone at the speeds of OC-48 with ATM switches. They are almost done with their ATM backbone network capable of pumping 160 billion bits per second.

You are correct about a relationship with Sprint, although I don't know if Sprint is their backbone. As for Sprint carrying 70% of international IP traffic, I'd be very surprised if that is true. Domestically, my understanding is that Worldcom's UUNet and MCI are 1 and 2.
