I looked at sandra 2002 cpu benchmarks. The rest of them
would depend on system and applications as well and we need
something that would be system and application independent.
So your implications of picking and choosing are not
warranted.

Granted that for the system selection we need a different set
of benchmarks but key word here is system. Model numbers are
for the processor only

Does that make sense?

You would not expect the same performance from following two
systems:

athlon xp 2000+ athlon xp 2000+
Gforce 4 on board graphics
souund blaster on board and sound
1024MD DDR 16MB SDRAM
100 GB / 7200 2GB / 5400

would you? Yet the processors are of the same kind.....
