You know arno...I just saw the movie "We Were Soldiers" and a small part of the fabric of the story is to depict the cluelessness of politicians and even the generals....

Shortly after the Ia Drang battle, General Westmoreland commented that if we only lost one soldier for every 10 the North Vietnamese lost, we'd eventually win the war, because we'd wear them down.

The funny thing about that remark, and what showed Westmoreland to have been totally clueless was that General Vo Nguyen Giap made a similar comment more than 10 years before Westmoreland in the context of the war the Vietminh were waging against the French. The difference was, however, that Giap commented that the French could kill 10 North Vietnamese for every French soldier killed and the Vietminh would still win the war.

The difference was that the North Vietnamese were fighting for something they believed in. The French, and later the United States, weren't.
