albert, RE: that is even stranger, the options that are issued on the money would make reporting of eps hard as options would float in and out of the money.

Balance sheets are static snapshots as of a date certain. Reported eps are as of that date.

That is why you saw a number of companies have a decline in diluted shares in 2001. The price decline meant that more options were out of the money which reduced diluted share.
