The fact is, the Holocaust has been wonderfully documented, and millions of Jews died in the gas chambers or through being worked to death. The number is close enough to 6 million to continue using that figure. My father- in- law, who was Eisenhower's chief clerk at SHAEF, knew about it. I have had friends who lost family, barely fleeing in time themselves. Ronald Reagan, as an intelligence officer in the Army in charge of instructional films, had a first look at raw footage from some of the camps. He quit his country club shortly after, for blackballing a Jewish applicant, and got into a fistfight with someone who made ant- semitic remarks, because the images were so horrifying and he had been so upset. Taking care of the survivors of the camps was a nightmare after liberation. In Poland, the Aschwitz- Birkenau complex has been preserved, including crematoria, as a reminder. At Yad Vashem, the memorial to Holocaust victims in Israel, a major effort has been made to document and honor the Righteous, gentiles who helped Jews by giving them shelter or helping them escape. The Jews were hunted down to die in extermination camps throughout Europe, along with gypsies, homosexuals, and political prisoners...... |
