SGI Japan To Offer Low-Cost 3-D Display System
Friday, March 8, 2002
TOKYO (Nikkei)--SGI Japan Ltd. is to introduce this month an inexpensive display system that can project highly detailed three-dimensional images onto a large screen.

The new system combines all needed equipment in a single set, including a Unix server, a projector, and a screen measuring 5 meters wide and 3 meters tall. SGI Japan expects it to be used to display data from spreadsheet and presentation software, and sees manufacturing design centers and local governments as the major buyers.

A basic model will be priced from 39.8 million yen, one-tenth as much as the company's earlier model because unnecessary components and functions have been removed. Higher-end versions, priced from 49.8 million yen, will come with built-in streaming functionality to enable smooth display of video distributed over the Internet.

SGI Japan is expecting sales of 200 sets annually.
