A list is compiled and sorted by their impact dates or event dates which is the time an upcoming merger/acquisition or product launch is expected to take place. A second list is maintained that keeps track of corporations that have no operating business and few, if any, assets. They are public companies that just retain capital structure and reporting status. These shells are ideal to acquire or merge with a private company looking to go public. A private company that wishes to ``go public'' merges under state law into a ``shell'' company which generally is a ``reporting'' company in good standing under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.
