Intel gave the semis a dose of "cool reality" this evening by answering analysts questions about whether they saw a robust recovery occurring this year. Intel responded that is not what they are seeing, just a normal seasonal pattern coming off of a bad year. Sales projections were toned down closer to the middle of the previous range. They said that margins look good as their experience with 0.13 micron and new designs has occurred faster than expected and other cost cutting measures have taken effect. They also see a bit better picture for the server end of the business. But communications and consumer application remain slow and general business is expected to see only a mild recovery during 2002.
