Are you forgetting that in 1973 they attacked Israel first and came close to defeating the Israelis -- some American armor delivered right at the front was handy in stemming that disaster?

I think you're doing the forgetting -- the 'disaster' that Nixon averted was the destruction of the encircled Egyptian third army by the Israelis. The war was stopped after Israel stopped losing and started winning.

The Egyptians were enemy number one back then, and their aim, according to the Israelis, was to annihilate Israel. They are tolerably good neighbors now, after the peace was signed and all the land conquered in '67 was given back. A good model for the Palestinian-Israeli peace, don't you think?

It was. Unfortunately, you forget it's been tried, and it failed. One minor difference: Egypt kept their peace deal; they didn't take the land and then attack again. Arafat broke every part of his deal. He was supposed to get the land (neither UN 242 nor Oslo ever promised him 100%)gradually, in return for his building the state, ending the incitement, educating for peace. Remember when he stood on the White House lawn and renounced violence? Or do you regard the whole history of the Oslo negotations as irrelevant?

Israel should have done the deal with King Hussein in the 80's. King Hussein would have kept the deal. Arafat doesn't want peace because he doesn't know how to survive in peace; at the end of the day, his only talent is survival in the violent chaos that he foments.
