Mid-quarter updates show continued sluggish tech spending

MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

March 7 — In separate mid-quarter updates of their sales forecasts, personal computer chip maker Intel Corp. and computer server maker Sun Microsystems said sales remain weak as corporate spending on technology remains sluggish. The briefings offered few surprises, and provided investors with little evidence of a hoped-for upturn in tech spending.

INTEL TIGHTENED the estimated range it provided when it posted fourth quarter results in January and nudged the midpoint of the range slightly higher. The leading maker of personal computer microprocessors had forecast first quarter sales of $6.4 to $7.0 billion dollars; the new forecast put sales in a range of $6.6 billion to $6.9 billion.
Analysts had expected the company to forecast revenue around the mid-point of its earlier guidance. They expect the company to post a first-quarter profit of 12 cents to 16 cents a share, with a mean forecast of 14 cents, on revenue of $6.7 billion, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.
Intel’s forecast would put first-quarter sales some 1 percent to 5 percent below fourth-quarter levels.
Intel Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant said the company was benefiting from a bit less spending on its factories during the quarter and a slightly higher demand in its server business. Intel said its communications businesses remains weak.
