Intel notes sales uptick, but sees no economic recovery in sight

Computer chip giant Intel said it expects first quarter sales of 6.6 to 6.9 billion dollars, a slight uptick to its previous forecast of 6.4 to seven billion dollars.

In a later conference call with media and analysts, Intel chief financial officer Andy Bryant gave a guarded assessment of the chip giant's prospects, saying the company has yet to feel the effects of the apparent upturn in the broader economy.

"We have seen no evidence yet of an economic recovery in our business," he said.

The small Intel gains are in keeping with expectations about the computer chip industry this year.

The company said gross margins would fall in the mid-point of the range it gave earlier this year, which was "around 51 percent."

All other projections remain unchanged, Intel said in a statement.

The news is a small ray of sunshine in the computer chip industry, which saw first-ever declines in sales last year.
