Nortel close to winning Israeli contract

(8-Mar-02)

Media reports in Israel are suggesting that Nortel Networks has won an order from Pelephone to construct a 2.5G CDMA 1x network. The contract is said to be worth around US$100 million. Several reports suggest that Nortel beat Lucent on price and Motorola on quality.

The contract requires that existing Motorola equipment in urban areas is removed to the rural areas and Nortel equipment installed. Presumably, then Motorola will be required at a later date to upgrade its newly positioned CDMA equipment to 1x standard.

A Pelphone spokesperson said that no formal decision has been taken yet.
