I was ahead of you in suggesting total system, independent performance benchmarks, over on the AMD thread (before it became the hypocritical censored thread). But I don't think it will ever happen, for several reasons:
- The OEM's don't want it, it would limit their ability to use high end brand name parts and other no-name cheaper parts, and still sell the system at a premium. They would also have to assume R&D costs currently performed by their vendors, and actually have to compete on performance.
- Intel doesn't want it. It would take away from their lead marketing position. And since Intel provides a large percentage of the funds for PC advertising (co-op funds), they have a strong position.
Does it make sense for the consumer, you bet it does.
But AMD's current scheme is completely phoney. It implies (to the consumer) that it compares AMD chips to Intel chips, when the scheme is based on another AMD chip. Thus, no consumer value, only consumer confusion. It is probably a major reason AMD lost nearly all it's retail business.
