Mar 7, 2002, (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung /FT Information via COMTEX) -- Viag Interkom, the German subsidiary of UK mobile telecommunications group MM02, plans to construct a third-generation (UMTS) mobile telecommunications network in Germany and conform with the relevant licensing conditions, as well as with agreements entered into with its network operations partner T-Mobile. Peter Erskine, head of MM02, has said that his company will pursue a cautious policy with regard to investments in German UMTS capacity, and that a decision will be reached between December and June of the coming year as to whether any investments are to be made in a UMTS network.

However, on Wednesday, Mr Erskine also said that the company is still planning to launch its German, UK and Dutch UMTS services in the summer of 2003. It is reported that there are already definite development plans for the network, and that 3,000 sites have already been officially secured for transmission installations.
