In private many folks from the cdma world are starting to talk more openly about the PTT Nextel/QCOM/MOT deal, apparently what's leaking out is that QCOM's basis for the deal($100m scam) was that they were extremely annoyed last summer/fall when everyone expected Nextel to announce an immediate network upgrade to cdma 1xRTT. QCOM very much wanted the momentum of Nextel's announcement. They wanted a new convert for chipset/handset/equipment sales. As you may already know Nextel had RFPs out to everybody and spent many months on due diligence. When equipment mfgs. (ie. Nortel/Lucent/Ericcson/Samsung) and Qualcomm finally figured out that Nextel was NOT going to migrate, they were all pissed. They felt they'd been played. So apparently the $100m QChat deal although legit was basically a form of payback. Perhaps Qualcomm was looking to recoup some of the lost/delayed cdma revenues? What Nextel got was exclusive rights to the QChat software, that much is true, but the keypoint (and it was confirmed by Esrey's mention that Verizon will have PTT also) is that PTT on a 1xRTT network is not a huge hurdle, thus the exclusivity is totally meaningless.(just call/ask Qualcomm) Nextel's been had, bigtime. CDMA exec's damn near fall out of their chairs from laughter whenever the subject is even brought up. I knew the deal was rotten the moment it was announced, and now I'm satisfied as to the motivations as per QCOM. Apparently Alltel, Leap, Verizon and Sprint are all planning a massive PTT attack on Nextel and other non-cdma carriers. I said it before and I'll say in again, Nextel is in play and will not be a standalone company 24mos from now. GAME OVER. PSSS. At the RaymondJames conference 3-4-02 Sprint confirmed that the software upgrade costs for PTT would be ~$50m
