Online ad spending said recovering

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The value of advertising spending online fell 14.7 percent last year, according to CMR, a research firm which tracks marketing campaigns and spending. But things are getting better, said David Peeler, CMR's president and CEO.

"The year (is) already showing some signs of improvement," he said. CMR's outlook is for "significant growth" -- specifically, spending almost 9 percent higher than last year's estimated $2.5 billion. In 2001, CMR found EBay (EBAY) was the largest online advertising buyer with outlays totaling $45.0 million, followed by General Motors (GM) at $43.3 million, and credit-card issuer Providian Corp. (PVN), $29.3 million. The top revenue-receiving Web sites were Yahoo ($344 million), AOL.com ($319 million) and Excite ($127 million).

Dot-com shutdowns shrink again

The ranks of dot-com companies were thinned by another 18 firms in February, according to a monthly report from Webmergers.com. "February's numbers marked the lowest casualty rate since August of 2000," said the firm's Tim Miller. The worst of the Internet company shakeout is over, he said, suggesting last month's shutdowns included firms that had been hoping for funding. "If you look at the number of shutdowns, it is a classic bell-shaped curve. It is tapering off and we expect a plateau," Miller told Newsbytes. Shutdowns and bankruptcies since January 2000 total at least 806, he added.

AOL veteran replaced at broadband unit

Audrey Weil, who joined America Online in 1988, is leaving her position as president of AOL Time Warner's America Online broadband group after less than a year. She told the Wall Street Journal her move was voluntary. "I was looking to take a little bit of a breather," she said, adding that she expected to return to the company after taking some leave. Lisa Hook, the president of AOL Anywhere who joined the company in 2000, will replace Weil.

Latest Web ratings

Two research firms released monthly reports on the popularity of Web sites and Internet radio. The top five Web properties, for at-home users, in the week ended March 3 were AOL Time Warner (AOL) (40.1 million),Yahoo (YHOO) (35.1 million), MSN (32.0 million), Microsoft (MSFT) (16.8 million), and Google (10.1 million), Nielsen/NetRatings (NTRT) reported. The same five properties were the most popular for users at-work, with the exception that Yahoo was number one and AOL was second.

Among online radio listeners last month, the 10 most popular streams, as measured by hours of programming delivered, included four Internet-only ventures. Jazz FM (www.ejazz.com) was top-rated by MeasureCast Inc., followed by Virgin radio (www.virginradiouk.com), KING-FM (www.king.org), Mediamazing (http://www.mediamazing.com/) , and WQXR-FM (www.wqxr.com). Other Web-only signals in the top 10 were ESPN Radio (www.espnradio.com), KNAC.com (www.knac.com), and 3WK Undergroundradio (www.3wk.com).
