Randy, obselencense implies a replacement. But there isn't one, as of yet.

In any case, the article that you cite certainly doesn't make a case for Java as the replacement. Basically, what the article is lobbying-for are evolutionary changes in today's OS's to better accomodate real-time response.

I'm not sure that I agree that today's OS's are that seriously deficient about real-time response. Certainly not for typical PC tasks, anyway.

Sun, of course, seems to be saying that we don't need an OS at all...
