The problem is that the idea is attached to the person, unless you find a way to disentangle them, so when you attack it, you are pretty much directly attacking the person. There are ways to disentangle them. One is to refer to an idea that is generally associated with such a discussion, and cite it as "It is generally said", or some such locution. The other is to find a citation elsewhere: George Will says; In a similar discussion, Edwarda said; I read the other day; or whatever, as long as it is not an obvious, direct allusion to her post.......
