The earth has gone through warming and cooling cycles long before modern "civilized" people came along.

And sooner or later we're going to have another one. What are we going to do about that? Well, we can try to prevent it. Or we can deal with it. Those are the choices. I'm not out there advocating prevention. I'm simply suggesting that we start giving some thought to how we might deal with it if it happens.

The impact of warming and cooling cycles was different before modern civilization. We now have a lot of infrastructure that we expect to remain on dry land rather than under water. We have agribusiness that expects temperature and rain patterns to vary only within certain tolerances. This country was horrified to lose a couple of tall buildings in New York. How will we feel when the Lincoln Memorial is under water? Or all of Manhattan. Will we try to save them? How much will that cost? During pre-civilization, people just picked up their tents and blankets and moved to higher ground. They didn't have as much investment in infrastructure as we do. They weren't as spoiled and risk averse as we are. They didn't have an insurance industry also expecting climactic activity within certain tolerances. I think we need to be doing some preliminary thinking about how we might cope if we're not prepared to apply ourselves to prevention.
