I came back from China with a cough that took years to go away. Were I to go again, I'd protect myself. I think the problem was largely particulates.

Not run them over?

I saw a number of multiple bike crashes. It's like auto racing--if one goes out of control, those nearby go down, too. Then there is a lot of screaming of apparent recriminations. Those who can pass successfully just keep going. No one seems concerned about the well-being of the fallen.

Is that to catch falling workers?

I don't know what the mats are for. One problem with a place like Beijing is that you just can't stop someone on the street and ask questions. Had I spent six months there, maybe I would have found the answer.

It's an interesting place. The whole country is. One thing I found odd is that little kids wear crotchless pants so they can just squat anywhere. A very different place.
