Until somebody who's name escapes me, John I think it was, threatened to sue, the to-or-about rule worked JUST FINE. I have a toorabout with someone, and it WORKS FINE. IN fact, for many many people, it has WORKED FINE.
It has been available for a long time, and has hardly "lead to a tortured nightmare of political correctness," because it has WORKED FINE. So I'd relax about that if I were you.
I don't think a guarantee that someone will not "feel offended now and then" is implicit in the TOU.
There are those (Laz is one) who was merely asked by a woman not to post to or about her. So he doesn't. So even if SI doesn't get involved, if a person doesn't want to upset another poster, a toorabout request can work JUST FINE.
So, on the one hand, we have an actual history of an effective way of keeping certain behaviors in check w/o either party having to leave SI, a history that has WORKED JUST FINE...
And on the other, we have your fears, and some guy named John who threatened to sue if he couldn't keep posting to some woman named Mary, I believe it was, so she left for weeks, until a moderated thread was created by some guy named Fred, I think it was.
That's not against the TOU, a moderated thread! It's just that people would like everyone to be able to post together, all the people we've known and argued with for years, now.
But oh well, if it can't be, it can't be. A moderated thread will WORK WELL, if not ideally, given that some old cyberpals are excluded. C'est la vie! The moderator will do what seems fair to him, after having become too bored with the interminable discussion and tedious attempts to negotiate what shouldn't be an issue, even, to stand it any more. |
