In the late 80s, Nokia was doing DSP, before TI had even thought of what DSP was and when FT was the same true behind-tissue joke, not just getting even a little soft snot produced in their wrinkled paper.

Doing the first standardised T1 system, as well some nice radiolinks, was also great, not to forget first ISDN and some great fiber. As well as personal computers, better than what IBM could produce or try to standardize at that time.
Btw, I think NEC too was earlier than TI in the DSP business, while ATT Bell Labs lost touch with reality in the early 90s. (Bless the Commodore and the Amiga, though, but that is outside the soft snot-tissue scope of FT)
But that was before the common market of the EU, the 200-300 million of instant consumers. |
