>> Republicans are supposed to be the party of free trade <<
gee, i thought republicans like to refer to themselves as being from the party of lincoln? i guess washington, adams, jefferson, hamilton, clay, etc would have all made bad republicans because they all believed in protective tariffs. lincoln, teddy roosevelt, mckinley, harding, taft, coolidge, hoover etc apparently didn't get your message either because they all supported tariffs.
in truth it is folks from the left such as woodrow wilson and fdr that we must thank for these dogmatic, utopian, free trade fantasies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I don't know much about the tariff. But I know this much. When we buy manufactured goods abroad, we get the goods and the foreigner gets the money. When we buy the manufactured goods at home, we get both the goods and the money." --Abraham Lincoln
"Give us a protective tariff, and we will have the greatest country on earth" --Abraham Lincoln
"Abandonment of the protective policy of the American Government must result in the increase of both useless labour, and idleness; and so, in proportion must produce want and ruin among our people" --Abraham Lincoln
"Thank God I am not a free-trader. In this country, pernicious indulgence in the doctrine of free trade seems inevitably to produce fatty degeneration of the moral fibre." --Theodore Roosevelt |
