Thanks for the thoughtful reply. re sale of wavelengths vs dark fibers, you've probably seen this article phoneplusmag.com Something else I read that has influenced my thinking about where the solutions may lie for merging voice and data networks was from Dr. Roberts' venture, Caspian Networks caspiannetworks.com You may have read this. It made me think that the MPLS overlay on IP may not be the ultimate solution, though it may be the next in line. OTOH, the bellheads may drag their feet enough such that by the time they've 'gotten religion' (as the JNPR exec was quoted recently) about IP, Caspian and/or others may have a different approach ready for field tests. BTW, did you see the data set he presents showing the growth of IP traffic through Dec 2001? Non-disclosures were signed to obtained the proprietary data from all the carriers.
