QUALCOMM, KDDI LINK ON USE OF WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY

RELATED SYMBOLS: (QCOM)(KDDIF)

TOKYO, Mar 11, 2002 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- U.S. communications giant
Qualcomm Inc. has announced it has tied up with KDDI Corp. (TSE:9433) on the use
of Qualcomm's BREW wireless technology.

Qualcomm's BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) platform, released
last year, enables developers to create applications for wireless devices.

KDDI will use the technology to offer various cellular phone services. In
mid-March, it will market a new cell phone handset equipped with a Global
Positioning System that identifies a user's current location and instantly
displays the route to the next destination.

The new handset, developed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (TSE:6752),
will cost about 20,000 yen.

NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) offers a similar service using a Java program
developed by Sun Microsystems Inc. of the U.S.

But BREW is said to enable faster processing speeds and is easier for developers
to use to create software.

KDDI, which trails DoCoMo in this field, hopes the tie-up with Qualcomm will
help popularize its new service.

Seventeen cell phone companies worldwide - including Verizon Wireless Inc. of
the U.S. and Korea Telecom Freetel Co. of South Korea - have so far decided to
employ Qualcomm's BREW technology.
