LG Stays Away From Launching EV-DO Phone

By Kim Deok-hyun Staff Reporter

LG Telecom said yesterday that the company would not launch commercial operations of a CDMA2000 1X EV-DO (evolution data optimized) network.

At a Kosdaq conference held at the Shilla Hotel, LG Telecom Senior Managing Executive Lee Sang-min said the company is not considering to upgrade its mobile phone network to the EV-DO, because of low demand and technological glitches.

``So far, the EV-DO service can demonstrate its viability only in the experimental stage,'' Lee said.

He added the EV-DO phone is not yet optimized for efficient data delivery, citing some technical difficulties that are hampering the introduction of the network.

The EV-DO network, which is the second phase of CDMA2000 1X mobile technology, is designed for optimal data throughput with a peak data transmission speed of 2.4-megabits per second.

The third phase, experts said, will be EV-DV (evolution data and voice), with real-time voice and data capabilities and further increases in efficiency.

LG Telecom's two rivals, SK Telecom and KTF, are currently undertaking trials of an EV-DO network.

Commenting on the company's plan to reduce its debt-to-equity ratio, Lee said LG Telecom would finance 200 billion won in cash to repay its debts.

``However there are no plans to borrow fresh funds from creditors or for new stock issues to slash its borrowings,'' he said.

LG Telecom shares rose 30 won or 0.38 percent to 7,930 won on the Kosdaq market in a midday trading on Monday.

==========

The sad fact is that LG as no funds for a do upgrade - and as a result has taken every opportunity to talk it down - including calling it an illegitimate standard due to its use of 1x for voice.

You may recall that LG bragged of taking a cheaper route to 1x upgrades than did SK and KT, which makes evolution to do much more expensive for LG now - even if they had some cash...

Pity poor LG - with its "wCDMA" IMT2000 competitors soon to offer cdma2000 1xEV services years before it can... as it can only save its pennies for a future, far more expensive and illusive dv upgrade...

... that promises little or no performance increase over do... (yes, it's true, contrary to Sprint's claiming more - check out details in 3GPP2)

All you really get with dv is the mixing of data+voice - against Viterbi's very good judgement...

Who can blame LG for throwing mud pies? <g>
