Bombardier lands C$1.49 bln Electrostar car contract
TORONTO, March 11 (Reuters) - Bombardier Inc. (Toronto:BBDb.TO - news) said on Monday its transportation division landed a C$1.49 billion ($937 million) contract with U.K. holding company Govia for 460 electric rail cars and a 20-year material and support agreement.

Govia, a joint venture between Go-Ahead Group plc and Keolis SA of France, is buying the Electrostar cars in addition to an initial order for 240 cars worth C$449 million in September 2001.

The deal will see Bombardier's electric cars replace ``slam door trains'' on south central routes in Britain, said the company in a statement. The total purchase order breaks down into C$848 million for the vehicles, and C$638 million over 20 years for technical and material support.

Bombardier will build the trains at its U.K. production facility at Derby starting in the summer of 2002, and the trains are expected to be in operation by December 2004.

The air-conditioned cars can travel at top speeds of 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour and will be equipped with global positioning systems and closed-circuit television systems. ($1 equals $1.59 Canadian)
