Instinet says Feb. share volume drops 24 percent
NEW YORK, March 8 (Reuters) - Agency brokerage firm Instinet Group Inc.(NasdaqNM:INET - news) which runs an electronic stock trading network, said its share volume fell nearly 24 percent in February.

Instinet, majority owned by global news and information provider Reuters Group Plc(quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: RTR.L) (NasdaqNM:RTRSY - news), handled 4.94 billion shares on its network in February, down from 6.49 billion shares in February 2001. The firm handled 5.44 billion shares on its system in January.

The prolonged bear market has taken a bite out of investor appetite for trading stocks, cutting into Instinet's volume.

Shares of Instinet rose 14 cents, or 1.71 percent, to $8.34 in Friday afternoon trading on the Nasdaq stock market. The shares have traded between $6.77 and $21.75 since their public debut in May.
