FR1, PayPal is far from a sure thing, but what they have going for them is a huge number of users. A payment system is more valuable the more people use it - "network effect". The biggest weakness is that they are heavily dependent on ebay transactions, and they have a strong competitor in ebay's in-house payment service. To succeed PayPal must sign up major merchants and lessen its dependence on ebay.
