Hell, I do that for fun.

Hmmm... and I bet you like to jump out of perfectly good airplanes too... :0)

No... I think we just had an "intelligence failure" where, despite having for several weeks apparently monitored these sites with predators and other photo recon, the commander in charge failed to realize the nature of the threat. He probably felt that this would be a mop-up operation of a few Taliban/Al-Qaida die hard stragglers.. Go in there... root them out, and withdraw within a couple of days.

If we had expected that many forces opposing us, our boys wouldn't have been going in without heavy weapons support (remember the 60mm mortars that fine company commander took was "optional").

They weren't planning for a long stay. If they had been they would have been setting up firebases and strongpoints to perform interdiction, and would have had maximum aerial fire support available to handle a potential hostile insertion.

If there is anything I pulled out my military experience, its that a commander should always have more firepower than he thinks he'll need. P is for plenty, and that's how the US has won wars for decades now... through overwhelming firepower, rather than placing soldiers in harm's way.

I might be wrong, but I do smell a bit of a screw-up(and some cover-up) going on here..
