Andrew, Quattro Pro 8 contains so many enhancements that it's on a complete par with Excel 97, and in many aspects superior. The list of enhancements over version 7 is quite long, and you can get better information from Corel's website. A very important point is that QP8 will convert all .xls documents (unlike Excel 97). Here are several things I have noticed and like:
1. Speed, I haven't run any tests but it seems to be much more responsive to me.
2. The menu bar is tightly consolidated providing more coherence to the tasks desired.
3. The icon and property bars are cleaner with excellent continuity with WordPerfect 8.
4. The version control is terrific. Similar to version manager in WP8.
5. The Web Publishing Wizard simplifies placing the document on the Web. (Corel should not use the word "Wizard," its too close to you-know-who's nomenclature).
6. The "Send to" options are terrific, i.e. drives, fax, mail, web, envoy, and BARISTA. Excel 97 and Lotus 97 can't top those options.
7. Much improved graphics capabilities and routines including advanced 3D options.
8. Simplified and improved formatting.
9. The "Perfect Expert" is far superior to Microsoft's Office Assistant. Any beginner can follow the logic and easily create professional looking spreadsheets. Intermediate and advanced users can create spectacular documents.
10. New tools such as "auditing" quickly helps you identify formula precedents and dependents. Great help with complex spreadsheets. (Excel has this feature also.)
11. More powerful slide show routine.
12. Simplified function builder and formula composer.
13. Much improved scenario expert.
14. Simplified and enhanced charting capabilities.
15. Enhanced Database features.
16. Enchanced cell features i.e., cell referenece checker and quick type. (Quick type eliminates unnecessary re-entering duplicate information.) I love this feature.
17. Multiple menu options give flexibility to upgraders. View Excel style menus, older Quatto Pro menus, even good the 'ol Lotus 123 slash bar menu and commands. (I finally broke that habit.)
I'm sure there are many more, others may elaborate.
