oh i don't claim that manufacturing jobs lost to free trade don't get replaced. who do you think the largest employer in america is aside from uncle sam? wal mart.

so now we come to another deleterious affect of free trade dogma. people lose well paying jobs as steelworkers, autoworkers, textile workers, etc and they are forced to get jobs for $7/hr working at wal mart so americans can rack up more debt and continue with their wanton consumption and materialism. good traditional conservatives realize that wanton consumption is not what made this country great. we believe that there must be a healthy balance of production to go along with the consumption.

this is why teddy roosevelt said:

"Thank God I am not a free-trader. In this country, pernicious indulgence in the doctrine of free trade seems inevitably to produce fatty degeneration of the moral fibre."

yes, we americans certainly know how to indulge and we certainly do see a fatty degeneration (literally) of the moral fibre.
